Swedish snowmobile licence – requirements and training
Most people who want to ride a snowmobile in Sweden need a specific snowmobile licence, known in Swedish as a förarbevis för snöskoter. To obtain it, you must complete approved training and pass the required theory test.
The minimum age for the test is 16. Supervised practice can begin at 15 years and 9 months, but private snowmobile practice is not permitted.
Requirements for a Swedish snowmobile licence
You must be at least 16 years old, complete approved theoretical and practical training, and pass the mandatory theory test. Supervised practice is permitted from 15 years and 9 months with an authorised instructor.
Mandatory snowmobile training
The training combines theory and practical riding. It covers safe operation, traffic and terrain rules, responsibility, environmental awareness and handling the snowmobile in different conditions.
Our course includes seven hours of live remote theory and three hours of practical training at Hoforsbacken. Once all mandatory elements are complete, you take the theory test with an authorised examiner.
Can I ride immediately after passing the test?
Once a passed test has been reported to the Swedish Transport Agency, you may in some circumstances ride before the physical licence document arrives. You must be able to identify yourself and meet all other requirements.
What does a snowmobile licence cost?
Our complete training costs SEK 3,999, including digital course material and use of a snowmobile. After passing, the Swedish Transport Agency charges a separate SEK 375 fee for issuing the licence.
Older licences and exemptions
A Swedish driving licence or tractor licence issued before 1 January 2000 can provide an exemption from the separate snowmobile-licence requirement.
Rules can also differ for organised snowmobile safaris. If you rely on an exemption, check the current conditions with the Swedish Transport Agency before riding.
Organised snowmobile safaris
Under certain conditions, a person with a driving or tractor licence may ride as part of organised tourist activity without a separate snowmobile licence.
- The ride must form part of organised tourist activity
- The group may contain no more than ten riders
- The group must be led by a person holding a snowmobile licence
- The group must follow a route selected in advance by the leader
